Take the EGR off the engine. Soak and scrub the valve and the manifold that goes to the valve in a strong degreaser. It may take some time to really clean it up. The most likely problem is 40 in the attached picture. Still, I would carefully clean out all the EGR parts.

The GL and ML are essentially the same. Gearbox TCU is common failure north of 100k. Air suspension too. Rear is cheaper to fix. I used cheap shocks and aerosus bags. Been fine. Fronts are much more complex and expensive. I won’t by really cheap here. Main costs have been with electrical problems.
